Description
AC-4 "Psychedelic Expression #2," Jimi Hendrix (1942-1970). Colored marker pens on paper. Image 7 x 12.75", frame 25.75 x 31.75". Bidders note that this work has been carefully double-matted in a large and elaborate, gold-finish frame.
Jimi Hendrix has been lauded by fans and critics alike for his skill as a guitarist, entertainer, songwriter, and innovator. With the recent discovery of several of his original works of art, Hendrix's talent and inventiveness in the visual arts has become a new and vital part of the cultural legacy of this legend of American rock and roll.
In 1972, Mr. Bliss Van den Heuvel, an art and antique dealer, purchased a collection of Hendrix's watercolor paintings and placed them in storage until 2004, when eventually he had them examined and authenticated by Leon Hendrix, brother of the artist and a founder of the prestigious James Marshall (Jimi) Hendrix Foundation in Seattle, Washington.
Each of the original art works from this outstanding collection are composed of brightly colored winding shapes and forms. The distinctive hallucinogenic images speak to Jimi's association of colors with emotions and can be seen as an extension of his musical projects, which he sometimes described as efforts to recreate colors in sound. His idiosyncratic method of drawing and painting involved working with five or six watercolor pens held between the fingers of his right hand while creating the outlines and designs with his left.
Jimi Hendrix's artistic endeavors were intimate expressions of a sensory thinker, and the fanciful original illustrations contained in this collection of his artwork serve as stunning examples of his unique contributions to psychedelic culture.
Please note: This item is not from the collection provided by the Winter family but has been included in the auction because of the clear connection between Johnny Winter and Jimi Hendrix. It has extensive provenance and has been in Guernsey's possession for years.
