Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Mayan Territories, ca. 500 to 900 CE. A stone hacha, painted white, carved in the form of a monkey head. The hacha was worn atop the protective yoke used by ballplayers in Mesoamerica; they are commonly shaped like heads. This monkey has a great degree of realism, despite simple carving, and is probably modeled on the native spider monkey, known as being inquisitive and chattering. The monkey image is associated with the Terminal Classic art of the South Coast of Guatemala; they are, like this one, often given large foreheads and small flat noses. Compare to a similar example at the Brooklyn Museum, New York City. Size: 7" L x 6.5" W x 7.25" H (17.8 cm x 16.5 cm x 18.4 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Peter Arnovick collection, San Francisco, CA
