Description
A PAIR OF MEISSEN PARCEL GILT AND POLYCHROME PAINTED SERPENT HANDLED VASES, UNDERGLAZE BLUE CROSSED SWORDS MARK, VARIOUS IMPRESSED NUMBERS, INCISED "E 153," 1855-1863, in an Empire style with oviform bodies centering floral clusters beneath a short flaring neck with egg-and-dart modeled rims, flanked by entwined serpent form handles, raised on a circular scalloped socle within stylized leaf tip detailed trim, enclosing an underside with underglaze blue crossed swords mark above an underglaze blue thrower's mark, one with impressed number "30," the other with "139," each incised "E 153." Height: 10 3/4" Width: 6 1/4" Depth: 5" NOTE: This model of serpent handled vases was first introduced by Leuteritz in 1850 by redesigning the Empire style vase and adding the intertwined serpent form handles.
