Item Details
Description
A Louis XV gilt brass mounted Boulle bracket clock Unsigned, mid 18th century The movement with rectangular plates united by four columnar pillars pinned through the backplate and single barrel with tandem drive for both the going and striking trains, the going train now with Brocot type deadbeat escapement regulated by lenticular bob pendulum, the strike train with rack and vertically pivoted hammer for sounding the hours only on a bell mounted within the superstructure of the case, the 7.25 inch circular twenty-five piece cartouche numeral dial with convex white enamel centre within chapter ring with blue-on-white Roman hour numerals within rococo borders and conforming Arabic five minutes to outer track, with sculpted steel hands, the engraved cut brass and brown shell marquetry veneered waisted case with surmount cast as Perseus carrying the head of Medusa applied to a gadroon-pierced dome over concave-sided superstructure decorated with foliate scrolls flanked by leaf cast mounts to the canted angles, the front with rococo scroll cast crest over brass-framed arch-glazed door enclosing marquetry veneered inside surface to the rear door and incorporating cast panel featuring an eagle perched on a scallop shell, the surround decorated with leafy scrolls within line border, the sides with recessed shallow-arch windows between marquetry panel veneered upper and lower margins, on generous scroll cast feet with cartouche apron between; with a wall bracket en suite of ogee outline with applied repeating leaf cast mount to edge of the table over conforming cut brass and brown shell stylised foliate marquetry veneers to front and sides interrupted by rococo scroll cast mounts applied to angles, the base with further conforming mount applied with pendant finial, the clock 66cm (26ins) high; the clock and wall bracket 90cm (35.5ins) high overall. The movement of the current lot departs from usual mid 18th century French practice in that it incorporates rack striking and a single spring barrel with tandem drive for both the going and strike trains. The use of rack striking (rather than a countwheel) allows the last hour to be sounded on demand and the provision of a tandem barrel driving both trains ensures that the strike train will not run down before the going train.
