Born in Germany, Hekking had immigrated to New York by the late 1850s. He established himself as a notable landscape artist closely associated to the Hudson River School, exhibiting paintings of the Adirondacks at the National Academy of Design in 1859. Following military service during the Civil War, Hekking lived in Hartford, CT, Detroit, MI, and Washington, D.C., before settling again in New York.
