BOWMAN 1954 BASEBALL CARDS, COMPLETE SET, 224 cards, complete as issued, including #1 P. Rizzuto, #6 N. Fox, #15 R. Ashburn, #45 R. Kiner, #58 Pee Wee Reese, #62 E. Slaughter, #64 E. Mathews, #65 M. Mantle, #66A J. Piersall, #84 L. Doby, #89 W. Mays, #90 R. Campanella, #95 R. Roberts, #101 D. Larsen, #110 R. Schoendienst, #129 H. Bauer, #132 B. Feller, #138A G. Hodges, #154 D. Newcombe, #161 Yogi Berra, #163A D. Philley, #164 E. Wynn, #170 D. Snider, #177 Whitey Ford, and #196 B. Lemon. Each housed in an individual rigid plastic sleeve. 1954.
Most in very good condition overall, with some fuzzy or slightly rounded corners, some minimal chipping to edges, and minor/minimal discoloration to borders; some with minor creases, and stains or minor losses to backs, some in excellent condition with less than expected wear; #65 Mantle very good to excellent with slightly rounded corners and some minute creasing.
CONDITION NOTE: All condition reports are based on general, overall observations only, and are not meant to serve as a detailed analysis of condition. Please contact the department with your specific condition questions.
Provenance: From the collection of Alvin Colston Busey, Silver Spring, MD.
Catalogue Note: Card number 66 was originally slated to be Ted Williams. However, due to a contract dispute with Topps, with whom Williams was signed, Bowman replaced Williams with a card featuring Jimmy Piersall. Interestingly, Piersall was also featured on card number 210, as planned before the change. The only difference between these cards appears to be the trivia question featured on the back. The result is that the unofficial #66 Ted Williams card is one of the more sought after cards of the era, while also making the #66 Jimmy Piersall somewhat more desirable than the #210 example.
