China, Yuan Dynasty, 1279 to 1368 CE. The Yuan Dynasty came about from the conquest of the Song Dynasty by the great Mongolian ruler Kublai Khan. This fascinating pottery head from this time of Kublai Khan and Marco Polo features a youthful Lohan - one of the 18 Arhats, and possibly represents Vijraputra - The Lohan known to be playful and free of inhabitions. With tight single curl atop his head, infectious smile, bright almond-shaped eyes and well formed ears with slight indication of elongated earlobes - common in most depictions of Buddha and the Arhats. Custom stand. Size: 4" W x 4.5" H (10.2 cm x 11.4 cm)
