First edition of a classic work of libertarian political philosophy and freedom of the press and expression, "the book that Jefferson did not write but should have" (Levy, 283). Tunis Wortman was a New York lawyer and democratic theorist, and penned the work in the wake of the Sedition Act. Wortman writes that "The freedom of speech and opinion... is not only necessary to the happiness of Man, considered as a Moral and Intellectual Being, but indispensably requisite to the perpetuation of Civil Liberty..."
