Thomas Heyward, Jr. (1746-1809) was a signer of the United States Declaration of Independence and of the Articles of Confederation as a representative of South Carolina. During the Revolution, while in command of a militia force, he was taken prisoner by the British during the siege of Charleston. He continued to serve as a judge after the war, retiring from the bench in 1798. The present document directs the sheriffs of South Carolina to apprehend John Cannon and John Sommers of Charleston and bring them to court to answer charges that they owed £135, 18/6 "lawful money of Great Britain" to Benjamin Jones.

Due to the size and/or weight of this lot extra charges may apply.

Some ink writing (docketing?) on the back of the document is bleeding through; very good.
