Description
''Wheel'', vitreous and engobe earthenware, signed and dated on the underside: Jeff Irwin 95, 28'' H x 23'' W x 13.25'' D, est: $150/250
Note: Jeff Irwin is a noted San Diego earthenware and ceramic sculptor. The artist frequently limits his palette to just black and white, as in the present work, and finishes the fine details with a sgraffito technique in black glaze. He writes of his artistic process of creating unexpected composition and shape, juxtaposition and nature and man-themed decoration: "I use this pushing and pulling of space and illusion as another means of manipulating the viewer's perception. These conflicts and contradictions encourage a questioning atmosphere and direct the viewer to examine the ambiguities of reality, illusion and perception. Another consistent theme in my work involves integrating the human presence with the narrative. Though a recognizable figure is rarely depicted, I utilize images that refer to this presence. My use of predominately black and white is influenced by German Expressionist Wood Block Prints" (http://www.grossmont.edu/people/jeff-irwin/artists, 22 October 2015). Irwin taught at Grossmont College from 1989-1999 and regularly exhibits nationally from his San Diego studio. Provenance: SimaySpace Galleries, San Diego, CA; Property from a Corporate Collection, San Diego, CA, acquired from the above, March 1996
