"The first full-scale history of the United States navy. Cooper's interest in the navy came from his time as a sailor on a merchant vessel, & his service in the United States navy from the age of 18. Cooper obtained the rank of midshipman before leaving in 1811. There is much scarce material on the major figures in naval history in the Colonial and Federal periods, as well as the conflicts with the Barbary pirates, and the War of 1812."
