Native American, Alaska, Tlingit, ca. 19th century CE. An impressive, hand-woven basketry hat comprised of twined spruce root, the handsome form boasting a tall cylindrical crown and a wide rim, the surface hand painted with a stylized sea creature, its visage with expressive eyes and mouth on the front rim, a tail on the back, and flippers on the sides - all outlined in black with the forms filled in with periwinkle blue, forest green, and russet red-brown hues, the crown painted that same rich periwinkle blue and the ground in natural finish. Size: 17" in diameter x 10" H (43.2 cm x 25.4 cm)
