Item Details
Description
A Rare Early Wedgwood Pearlware 3 piece Set. All in a vibrant apple green with gilt accents. A Footed Cake Plate or compote measuring 13x11.50x6.50. Two matching footed dishes each 11.25x8x2. These are early Pearlware in a rarely seen pattern and a matched set of 3 is very hard to fund. There is some age appropriate crazing, 2 possible thin harlines to underneatg of cakeplate (or just crazing lines). One of the dishes has been broken and reglued, definitly worth restoring properly. Wt on all 3 Pearlware is an earthenware made by Josiah Wedgwood in 1779. It was copied by other potters in England. Only certain colors like blue, yellow, and green were used as underglaze painting for pearlware because materials for other colors could not stand the heat necessary to fire the glaze. In order to achieve the white look of porcelain When Wedgwood developed Pearl Ware, he modified the composition of Cream Ware to give it a whiter appearance, and most importantly developed a Pearl Ware glaze, which had the addition of cobalt to impart a blue tint. Experimentation began in 1774, and the ware was introduced into commercial production in 1779. Pearl Ware can be identified by the blue tint of the glaze, and is marked, often with the addition of an incised P or the word Pearl.
