Persia; 18th century or earlier. Finely crafted Koran / Quran covered in red Moroccan leather with very fine script and two illuminated front papers. This book comes with a letter dated Sept 7, 1937 from Dr. Martin Sprengling of the Oriental Institute, University of Chicago. In the letter, he states that the number 813 which appears at the bottom of many of the pages may be date, which would correspond to about 1410 or 1411 A.D. Though he does go on to say that the general make-up and style of the handwriting would agree with this date, he could not at the time confirm it. A copy of this letter and another relating to this Koran will be supplied to the winning bidder.
