Description
Italian School, late 19th / early 20th century. "Crouching Venus", white marble, apparently unmarked. Figural sculpture depicting the much-iterated crouching figure of Venus (or Aphrodite), the the goddess kneels with her weight on her right knee, her right arm is raised to cover her breast, as she is surprised by an intruder in the baths; after the original 2nd Century Hellenistic period statue "The Lely Venus." Overall approximately 20" x 10.25" x 10.
Condition
Dirt and grime throughout; would benefit from light cleaning. faint varnish detected; likely not original. Repaired fractures to wrist and fingers. Discolored hairline to figure's right hip. Two small pits to figure's left side. Scattered discolorations to base.
