Description
Chinese, Qing Dynasty, 19th century. A bronze patinated copper alloy figure of Damo or Bodhidharma (Japanese: Daruma), the Indian founder of Zen Buddhism and the first Chinese patriarch, the bearded male buddha depicted seated in dhyanasana wearing ornately folded and floral chased loose robes open at the chest and draped around shoulders with each hand held at chest level holding cincihna mudra, the gesture of understanding, the face holding a serene expression with thick beard surrounding a smiling mouth under downturned meditative eyes with thick curled eyebrows, the face flanked by elongated earlobes set under a head bald at center with locks of curled hair along outer perimeter, the arhat's underside with an incised mandala. Apparently unmarked. Approximate height 13.375", width 9.375", depth 7.25".
