Description
George Unite (English (Birmingham), 1825-1928), circa last quarter 19th century. A sterling silver baby rattle mounted with red coral, the small turned form heavily covered in floral chasing and repousse and having central bulging disc near issuing four dangling bells, with red branch coral handle at base as teether and terminating in a whistle. Hallmarks above coral with standard mark, city mark, slightly obscured date code (either 1876 or 1882), and Queen Victoria duty mark used 1838-90, the maker's mark to top of form. Approximate length 3.75". Approximate weight 30.5 grams. Note: for similar examples by English, Dutch, and American makers, see the permanent collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
