Description
Alexander II Russian 84 Zolotnik (.875) Silver Teapot, marked Moscow, 1856, unidentified maker "IFG" [Cyrillic], assay master Andrei Antonovich Kovalsky of lobed pear shape, with fitted lid, gooseneck spout and crested handle, h. 5-3/4", l. 7-1/4", dia. 4-1/4", 10.84 t. oz.
Condition
Scattered bumps and scuffs consistent with age and use, but in generally good condition. A short 1/8" split on the tip of the spout. The size, fitted lid, non-insulated handle, and rough area above the spout are all indications that the piece was originally a sugar bowl that has been modified - by replacing one handle with a spout - to form a teapot. Gilt interior. Marked (on the underside) with: 1) the St. George Moscow mark; 2) the assayer's mark "A.K/1856"; 3) the fineness "84" and the "IFG" [Cyrillic] maker's mark. Marks good with the exception of the well-rubbed St. George mark. The underside of the lid part-marked.
