Tibetan Silk Mandala (Thangka) of Lord Brahma and his AvatarsBelieved to be from the 18th to 19th century.This beautiful antique work of art is believed to be a depiction of the Hindu deity Lord Brahma and his fourteen incarnations or avatars. Painted in what appears to be the batik style, on silk favored by the artisans of these religious objects with care to the details that allow even the illiterate of many generations to identify the deity represented. In this Thangka Brahma is shown with three faces, holding a string of beads and a Lotus flower. The avatar Vajrapani shown at bottom center is done in the style of traditional Tibetan Buddhism. The image is 31 inches by 20 inches with a blue silk border on three sides and a black silk border on bottom for a total display size of 28 inches by 48 inches. The central image is intact yet fragile do to the nature of antique silk fabric. The border is faded yet remains intact on three of four sides with stress or related wear and damage to the blue silk on the left side of the image. The piece is attached to the rear mounting board of the frame which will have to be removed professionally.
