Description
Rare Carlo Giuliano Archeological Revival, lava, jasper and 18k yellow gold bib necklace, 19th century

composed of various colored finely carved lava cameo's depicting classical Greek mythical faces, measuring approximately 48.0 X 27.4 mm to 37.35 X 18.0 mm, interspaced by red jasper rams head cameo's, each riveted, suspending two gold rings and smaller lava cameos measuring approximately 17.4 X 15.0 mm, all cameo's bezel set in 18k yellow gold, attached to an 18k yellow gold braided mesh link necklace, secured by a wire clasp, clasp signed C.G. for Carlo Giuliano, length 21", gross weight 134.5 grams.
Carlo Giuliano (1831-1895) was an Italian goldsmith who moved to London from Italy with his wife and two sons Carlo and Arthur, circa 1860. He established a workshop on Frith Street where his predominantly revivalist jewelry was created. This location did not have a showroom, because Giuliano's jewels were outsourced to various retailers in Londons West End. The firms of Hunt & Roskell, C.F. Hancocks and Robert Phillips were largely responsible for Giuliano's success, until he opened his own shop in 1874. Items produced for these retailers were sometimes "double marked" with the C.G. Goldsmith's registered Hallmark for Giuliano and an unregistered trademark applied as a plaque by the retailer. Carlo was a close associate of Castellani and his early hallmark, monogram of initials C.G. together with some of his early work in the archeological style, can be confused with that of Castellani. Their business closed in 1914.
