Mid-Century Tea Weintraub Sternklar Polish Israeli-American NY Artist Nocturne with Minstrel
Besides her exhibition career and a stylistic Expressionism reminiscent of David Burliuk and Marc Chagall, Tea Sternklar was the mother of concert pianist and composer Avraham Sternklar who based one of his internationally performed compositions on a series of his mother's paintings.
STERNKLAR, Tea Weintraub (Polish Italian Israeli American, 1905-1997): Nocturne with Minstrel, oil/canvasboard, 20 x 16 inches (26 1/2 x 22 1/2 x 1 3/4 inches framed), signed T. STERNKLAR middle right, artist's NY studio stamp verso. Original or period likely artist-decorated frame molding with dual linen and gilt liner. Jewish and Judaica interest.
Provenance: Florida Gulf Coast charity sale of estate items, 2016.
Biography of Tea Weintraub Sternklar (1905-1997)
...recognized as an artist of international level...paintings have been viewed by thousands in exhibits throughout the country...born in Poland...most of her young life in Italy (where she spent 14 years) and then Israel (15 years). Upon moving to the United States...in New York...exhibited in Greenwich Village...and the White House. During the Kennedy administration, one of her works depicting President Kennedy with daughter Caroline was gratefully accepted by the White House...last years of her life in New Jersey...won several awards from the Salmagundi Scholarship Fund. She was also featured in...the Village Voice, among others....Her son, Avraham Sternklar is a noted concert pianist and composer...He composed 10 piano pieces entitled "A Promise Fulfilled" representing the many faces and moods of Israel. The compositions are based on 10 paintings by Tea...Mr. Sternklar often performs this work while exhibiting the paintings and discussing the magnificent scenes they represent. The pieces have been performed in such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center and were the subject of a half hour special on cable television...modern dance company danced to this set of pieces as the paintings were displayed on a giant screen...died at the age of 92 on Wednesday, April 30, 1997. --Lisette Ruch & artist's son & Ruth A. Condition
Very sound and painterly as discovered in a Florida Gulf Coast sale of estate items condition, likely somewhat mellowed or yellowed varnish, no visible craquelure, some typical moderate pigment edge wear under the rabbet. Frame patina top and side edge wear, some liner discoloration and some inner liner nicks.
