Description
L. 1 1/2"; Yellow faceted stone brooch tests 14k gold with lower grade gold backing. Enamel, pearl & glass brooch tests 18k gold. Mourning brooch, to mourn the deceased. Enameled & freshwater pearl border around beveled glass with woven human hair under the glass. The hair is not necessarily from the deceased; in the middle of the 19th century, 50 tons of human hair a year was imported into England for use by the country's jewelers.Mourning jewelry has been around since at least the 16th century, but it is widely associated with the Victorian Era.These pieces have tube hinge clasps with a 'C' catch, dating them circa 1850.
Condition
Yellow stone brooch has some bends in the bezel and a solder repair with copper wire around the bezel. The yellow glass/stone shows signs of wear from age, including minor chips and scratches. Enamel/pearl brooch is in great condition, no damage and no missing stones. See photos for condition or contact the auction house for a condition report.
