Annie Mural Tolliver (United States, Alabama, b. 1950), "Joe Looking Under Rainbow" acrylic on wood painting, 1995 CE. A wonderful example of Outsider Art by self-taught artist Annie Tolliver of Montgomery, Alabama - daughter of pre-eminent folk artists Mose Tolliver and Willie Mae Tolliver. The composition features an energetic boy, presumably Joe, holding up a glorious rainbow, all in a bright color palette against periwinkle blue ground outlined in black, and is signed Annie T. at the bottom. Ms. Tolliver grew up watching her father paint and learned by observation, essentially teaching herself. By ninth grade she dropped out of school and married the artist L. W. Crawford soon thereafter with whom she raised three children. Without a complete education, Tolliver resorted to cleaning in hospitals, motels, and restaurants. Interestingly her paintings were sold as Mose Tolliver's work until the fall of 1990 when a patron told her he wished to purchase work created by her. Currently a successful independent artist and paints full time, Annie T's work may be found in the esteemed collections of the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Strombecker Corporation in Illinois, as well as the House of Blues. In 2000, she was one of twelve artists featured in the exhibition "Voices Rising: Alabama Women at the Millennium" - the state's exhibit at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. Size: 16.125" L x 11.25" W (41 cm x 28.6 cm)
