Cast Bronze
India, 20th century in the style of Chola Bronzes of the 11th century
Standing bronze figure of the four-armed Shiva on a round lotus base in tribhanga pose, the head adorned with a crown and high towering hair (jatamukuta), his hands performing the position of fearlessness and holding an axe and antelope
Verso farmed by wheel-like halo, called shirashchakra
Gentle facial expression with almond-shaped eyes, fine eyebrows and a full lips
Precious jewelry covers the body and a short dhoti is tied around the hips
The back also executed in detail
Total height: c. 88.5 cm

Chandrashekhara can be translated as ‘moon ornamented lord‘and is a benevolent form of the Hindu god Shiva, who is especially venerated in southern India. Usually he is depicted with a tall coiffeur, a leaping stag and an ax, featuring him at the same time as the master of the animals and victor over all enemies.


Cf. a similar bronze of Shiva as Chandrashekhar in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum (accession no. 2007.2) as well as exhibited on loan to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 1972 (L72.23.4) and the Denver Art Museum, 1981 (56.1981).



Condition:

The bronze is in good condition with usual, slight signs of age and wear. Verso restorations and ibidem flaws on the right arms, partly little loss of material, small nicks and scratches. The total height measures c. 88.5 cm
