His inspiration comes largely from the arts of the Puebloan people whose designs he interprets and expresses in his own work. In the late 1970s while on a road trip from New Mexico to California, Rivera saw a pile of gourds by the road. At that point these future art pieces were foreign to him. He purchased and painted a few, found an immediate audience, and has been creating fantastic Pueblo gourd art ever since.
