Description
Hans Burkhardt. (1904-1994)
This is a great lithograph by internationally recognized artist, Hans Burkhardt. This is a scarcer , earlier lithograph from 1964. This is also an "artist proof", signed and dated in pencil.
A beautiful piece that once again deserves to be framed and admired. There are creases, speckles on the margins and verso which do not detract from the lithograph, especially upon framing.
This lithograph measures 19 3/4" x 26".
Hans Burkhardt was a Swiss American Abstract Expressionist. He emigrated from Basel, Switzerland to New York. He shared Arshile Gorgy's studio from 1929-1936. When he move to Los Angeles in 1937, Burkhardt represented the most significant bridge between New York and LA in that his paintings of the 1930's are part of the genesis of American abstract expressionists. He brought with him many of the nascent ideas of abstract and abstract expressionist painting that had been swirling among the NY artists, foremost among them, Arshile Gorky and Willemstad de Kooning.
Burkhardt's ability to evoke compelling works of human empathy has led several of today's preeminent art historians and critics to regard many of his paintings to be among the major works of our time.
He was a friend of American Abstract Expressionist painter, Mark Tobey.
Burkhardt's unique role as an important American painter is affirmed by the constant interest and continuing reassessment afforded his work.
His work is in the top international museums and private collections world wide.
