One page 4to Manuscript Letter Signed "J.F. Hartranft," as Governor of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA, March 1, 1876 on stationery ornately imprinted at head "Executive Chamber." Addressed to "His Excellency / Gov. S.J. TIlden," Hartranft relates, "I have the honor to transmit the enclosed [not present] copy of a Preamble and Resolution of the General Assembly of Pennsylvania...and request that your Excellency will be pleased to bring the matter to the attention of the Legislator of New York..." Bears a circular blue rubber stamp at top "Received / Executive Department / Mar. 4 76." Accompanied by an albumen tobacco advertising card depicting Tilden in a standing, waist length, 3/4 profile, pose. Imprinted at bottom "Sam J. Tilden / Honest Long Cut Chewing and Smoking / The Best Tobacco Sold 2 oz. for 5 cts / W. Duke, Sons & Co. NY."
Condition
MLS bears light toning and fold wear. Tobacco card bears toning and wear at edges on recto with smudges, pencil inscriptions, and tape residue on verso. Dimensions: CDV - 4.12 " H x 2.25 " W. MLS - 10.00 " H x 7.75 " W.
