Lot of Ephemera related to V.Admiral Lockwood , his Namesake Ship and including Autographs !This lot contains photos, personal correspondence, official US Navy invitations and other documents related to Charles A. Lockwood ( 1890-1967) who served in the USN from 1908 to 1947 and received the rank of Vice Admiral in the US Navy when he was promoted to that rank in October 1943 as he took command of the US Pacific Submarine Fleet during WWII. Her earned the nickname of " Uncle Charlie" from those under his command who were impressed with the care and attention to quality of life paid to them by their benevolent Admiral and the nickname " Mr.Submarine " for his special passion and career with the Navy's submarine fleet, changing the role and use of these ships forever. The Frigate USS Lockwood was Christened in his honor in December of 1970. Autographed photo of Vice Admiral Lockwood at the Signing of the Japanese Surrender aboard the USS Missouri , Tokyo Bay, 2 September, 1945. This is a 4 3/4 in by 6 in black and white official photograph of the historic surrender agreement, the photo shows Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz seated at the signing table, surrounded by 31 Military officers , each with a numeral imposed on the photo corresponding to a list of names printed on the bottom 3/4 inch of the photo. The pictured historical figures include: General of the Army, Douglas MacArthur ( No. 4), ADM Halsey ( No. 3) , Lt.Gen. Sutherland ( No. 5) , ADM Sherman ( No. 6 ) and Vice Admiral C. Lockwood at position No. 8. Signed Charles A.Lockwood in blue ink across the bottom 3/4 inch of the photo. Condition : Excellent , well conserved historical photo, no known issues.Autographed 1967 Universal Ship Cancellation Society envelope. This is a 35th anniversary commemorative envelope from the USCS convention in San Francisco CA 1967. Signed across the front " Charles A. Lockwood " in blue ink, with two 3 cent US Navy stamps and a postal cancellation of May 12th, 1967 from Westpex-USCS Conv. Sta. San Francisco CA. 6 1/2 by 3 5/8 Condition: Well preserved, colors bright, signature easily legible, excellent condition, no known issues. Autographed 1968 Todd Shipyards Corporation envelope. This is a commemorative envelope from the Todd Shipyards ( builders of the USS Lockwood) . Signed across the front " Mrs. C. A. Lockwood " in blue ink, and" Mrs. John Thomas Canty " in black ink, with 6 cent US stamp and a postal cancellation of Sept 5th, 1968 from Seattle Wash. 6 1/2 by 3 5/8 Condition: Well preserved, colors bright, signatures easily legible, excellent condition, no known issues. Autographed 1970 USS Lockwood envelope. This is a commemorative envelope from the Commissioning of the USS Lockwood . Signed across the front " Mrs. C. A. C E Lockwood" Personal Letter : Grey Stationary with letterhead of Mrs. Charles A.Lockwood , addressed to Mr. Jack Howland , 23 Sept, 1971 discussing the commissioning of the USS Pintado , a nuclear submarine. Envelope is 4 in by 6in , with a single folded page letter. Formal invitation: From Todd Shipyards Corp (the builders of the USS Lockwood ) addressed to Mr. Jack Howland , postmarked Aug 23, '68 and signed by Mrs.Lockwood , this invitation is in 3 parts, inner envelope, invitation card and reception card. 7 3/8 in by 5 in envelope with varying size inclusions. Condition Very Good for all contents, envelope has been torn when opened damaging portion with return address. Formal Invitation : From Department of the NAVY to Mr. Jack Howland Postmarked 13 Nov. 1970, invitation in three parts, commissioning ceremony, reception card and reserved seating card with instructions for full dress blues for participants. 5 1/2 by 4 1/2 envelope with varying size inclusions. Condition: Envelope shows typical wear for an object sent through US mail, invitation and inserts are in excellent condition.
