HERBERT S. KATES WATERCOLOR PAINTING: Herbert S. Kates (1894 - 1947, America), watercolor and graphite on board port scene, probably a port in Massachusetts.

BIOGRAPHY:

Herbert S. Kates (1894 - 1947, America) Kates was an active painter, illustrator and writer and also the first Medical Artist of the US Army in WWI. He often hiked through the Adirondacks and his paintings frequently depict known rural and landscape scenes from the NW area, a la plein aire. Kates studied at the Art Students League and the Pratt Institute Art School and was a member of the New Rochelle Artists Association and the Society of Illustrators. He exhibited in the United States and abroad at the National Academy of Design, the National Arts Club and the Institute of Art and Science in Kingston Jamaica. Kates was also a writer and illustrator of books. His artwork can be found in the permanent collections of St. Lawrence University, Canton, NY, Adirondack Museum, Blue Mountain Lake, NY and the Institute of Art and Science in Kingston Jamaica.
