Description
** A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this lot will benefit The Fowler Museum at UCLA **
Jose "Joe" Mondragon Cordova (New Mexico, 1960s-1970s). A fabulous hand-carved wooden muerte well depicting a skeletal figure with long, black hair sitting on a bench in a two wheeled cart, and proudly holding a bow and arrow. The piece was finely carved by the artist Jose "Joe" Mondregon Cordova of New Mexico. (Signed "Joe Mondragon Cordova, NM" on the underside of the cart.) Cordova's mastery is in the details. Note how he painstakingly carved the figure's ribs, fingers, toes, not to mention that expressive face. Even the wagon shows marvelous flourishes such as the incised arrow-like motif adorning its front and back ends. A superb piece of figural folk art! Size: 22.25" L x 15.5" H (56.5 cm x 39.4 cm)
