This painting depicts the last major battle between American Indian forces. Pitting Quechan, Mohave, Tonto Apache and Yavapai warriors against Maricopa and Pima defenders, it took place during the intense heat of early September 1857. In the fierce fighting near the Gila River in southwestern Arizona, more than 100 warriors perished.

Condition Notes: With the unaided eye this piece appears to be in very good condition. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals no issues or signs of restoration. The work is framed in a gold leaf scoop with ornate corners. This frame is also in very good condition.
