Description
Small oil painting of a flowers in a vaseby Grigory Gluckmann (1898 - 1973). Oil on masonite panel. Framed. Signed lower left, “GLUCKMANN” and numbered “ ’38 “on the reverse (possibly a date - in 1938 Gluckmann was living in France). Depicting a loose, abstracted post-impressionist still life of flowers on a table. Possibly a sketch for a finished composition or portion of one.

NOTES / REFERENCES: Grigory Gluckmann was born on October 25, 1898 in the Russian town of Vitebsk. Grigory Gluckmann’s studio subjects and scenes from modern life were distinguished by their rich color and sensuous technique. In 1917 he entered the Art Academy at Moscow. From 1920 to 1923 he worked as an illustrator in Berlin. In January 1924 he spent nine months in Italy, working in a studio in Florence. His encounter with the Italian old masters was to be an important influence on his art. In October he moved to Paris, where he had an exhibition at Galerie Druet; his second exhibition, at Galerie Charpentier in 1934, established his success. He had other shows in Paris and London and in 1937 for the first time in New York, where he moved in June 1941. Gluckmann came to Los Angeles for his first exhibition at Daizell Hatfield Galleries in December 1941. He had a second exhibition there in 1944, and he moved his residence to Los Angeles in 1945. He had regular, very successful exhibitions at Dalzell Hatfield Galleries while also exhibiting at galleries in New York, which he frequently visited. He had a show at the Santa Barbara (Calif.) Museum of Art in 1946, the Charles and Emma Frye Museum in Seattle in 1956, and the Palm Springs (Calif.) Desert Museum in 1972. Grigory Gluckmann died in 1973. His works are in many museums and private collections including: The Luxembourg Museum; Petit Palais, Paris; The Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Musee de la Ville de Havre, France; Art Institute of Chicago; San Diego Fine Art Society.

Good overall condition. No in-painting and signature does not float under examination with ultra-violet light. Frame is in good condition and is older than the painting (American - 19th century) and not original to the work.
