Description
American Classical Mahogany Drop-Leaf Table, ca. 1820, school of Duncan Phyfe, New York, the single-board top flanked by like drop leaves with canted corners, and raised on a pedestal with a rounded urn joined to reeded saber legs with carved paw feet, h. 28-3/4", w. 24", d. 35-3/4", extended l. 44-3/8". A Duncan Phyfe table with a base similar to the present example is illustrated in Duncan Phyfe: Master Cabinetmaker in New York, p. 171.
Condition
Good as-found condition. In an older refinish, with some sc attered mars, abrasions, shrinkage and normal indications of age and use. There are a couple dark stains to the top, that appear to be to the finish, the largest is about 1/2" wide by 3" long, the smallest about 1/2" by 1" The top edge of the drawer face has a couple small veneer flakes, the largest a triangular one about 1/8" by 1/*8" by 1/8" The drawer has never been drilled for pulls. There are drop finials on all four corners of the apron. Each has a symetrical hole in its center.
