Description
RHODE ISLAND INLAID WALNUT SEWING CABINET / WORK BOX, a fine example, the unusual hexagonal form surmounted by two-tiered turned and molded pin cushion platform, retaining likely original red velvet covering and brass tack edging, over a case featuring nine thumb-molded drawers embellished with lightwood banding and fitted with original carved wooden knobs of faceted profile, molded base, the whole raised on six small carved feet, one drawer signed and dated "T. H. Duxbury / 1879". Pine and poplar secondary woods. Retains possibly original surface with rich color. Circa 1879. 19" HOA, 12" WOA, 12" DOA.
Very good overall condition with wear and losses to pin cushion covering and brass tack edging. Minor wear and small losses to drawer lips (one with old repair), knobs, and feet.
Provenance: From a Washington, DC private collection.
Catalogue Note: Thomas H. Duxbury (1849-1923), the probable maker of the present box, is recorded as a "Carpenter" and a "Stair Builder" in the Rhode Island state census for the years 1875, 1885, and 1915. Duxbury lived in Providence with his wife, Mary, and may have made the present example for her as a cherished gift.
