Description
Nineteenth century Continental painting of Jesus carrying the cross. Oil on tin panel. Mounted in original shadow-box frame. Unsigned. Label on the reverse, In Italian, gives the title as “Il Mediatore” and the name of the artist (after) as “Dan. Crespi”. The original work stated as in “Galerie royale de Dresden”. So this is a copy of an old master painting by Daniele Crespi (1598 - 1630), a well-known Italian artist. This work likely painted in Italy or Germany, circa 1870’s - 1900, as a Grand Tour acquisition Tour
SIZE: Painting - 4.75” x 5.75” (12 cm x 15 cm)
NOTES / REFERENCES:The same image, also oil on metal, was sold at Christie’s Amsterdam in June of 2010 (SALE 2838 / LOT 465 ), titled “MANNER OF DANIELE CRESPI, PROBABLY STOBWASSER FACTORY - Christ carrying the Cross”. Size for that painting was: 33.4 cm x 28 cm and it sold for $1,375.

Good original overall condition with no restoration. Crazing to the painted surface. Outer shadowbox with wear. Original glass in place. Inner gold frame with loss to the top inner border (see photo).
