Description
Comments - Terrific group portrait of twenty-eight deified generals of the Tokugawa Clan. The warriors surround a central figure of the elderly Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder and first shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate. After his death, he was deified as Tosho Daigongen. He wears an elegant black robe with a beautiful burnished pattern and a tall court cap, and holds a fan. Some of the men wear kimono, but most wear fine suits of armor and carry weapons. At left, a young man in a gray and white patterned robe pulls on an armored sleeve while the fellow sitting behind him holds a drum. The purple drapery overhead features the Tokugawa mon, or family crest, of three hollyhock leaves. Fine detail in the armor and expressive faces, with rich jewel-tone color and additional burnishing in the armor.
