Series; Twelve Months of Maiko

Comments - Designed in 1976, Junichiro Sekino's "Twelve Months of Maiko" series features portraits of maiko or apprentice geisha, beautifully dressed for the season with elegantly styled hair and accessories. Using a narrow vertical format, Sekino crops the images to show the women in close-up, focusing on the details of fabric, makeup, and hairstyling. He presents these traditional entertainers and hostesses in his distinctly modern style, contrasting bold calligraphic outlines with more delicate strokes. Many feature deluxe treatments such as embossing or mica. Each is printed on the artist's watermarked paper, with red artist's seal "Jun," pencil signed "Jun. Sekino" and numbered 19/88 R in bottom margin. Images from this series are highly desirable and rarely seen on the market. A fantastic choice for a sosaku hanga collector.
