Tadeusz Kantor (1915-1990)
Born in Wielopole Skrzynskie near Krakow the Polish artist studied from 1936 to 1939 at the Academy in Krakow. After a life in the underground during the Second World War he participated from 1945 significantly in the revival of cultural life in Krakow. Kantor's artistic is multi-discipline. He worked in a crossover as visual artist, theater director and stage designer and performed the first happening in Poland in 1965. He is known especially for his stage sculpture ‘The Dead Class’ from 1975, with which he advanced to the internationally most important representative of the Theatre of the Absurd. 1987 Kantor was represented at Documenta VIII with the performance of ‘The Death of Love Machine’. His painterly oeuvre developed from a surrealist influence to object images and conceptual works. (fea)
