Europe, Holland (The Netherlands), ca. 17th to 18th CE. Four square, ceramic Delftware tiles decorated with quaint genre scenes of young men at work in hues of the traditional Delft blue as well as bright yellow, green, red, plum, and brown on a white ground. The first includes a blacksmith dressed in a green apron over a red shirt and yellow knickers, hammering a piece, with his forge in the background. Another features a gentlemen dressed in yellow, blue, and white either sealing or opening a large barrel. In the third example, we see a young man within a serene landscape sitting upon a bench and holding a large basket. A lovely yellow flower blooms and flourishes near his foot. Last but certainly not least, we have a strong chap splitting a stone, also set in a verdant landscape. Delftware developed in Antwerp and spread north into modern-day Holland; it is characterized by white glaze with blue oxide paint (in this case various hues complement the blue as well) over a type of calcium-rich clay called marl. Size: Each tile measures approximately 5.5" L x 5.5" W (14 cm x 14 cm)
