Philippe Auge (French, b. 1935) oil on canvas painting, "Le Rideau," depicting a woman in elaborate Art Deco style headdress and bright citron colored dress, peering out from behind a drape, with a still life of fruit in the background. Signed "Auge" lower right. Housed in giltwood molded frame with linen liner. Sight - 21" H x 17 1/2" W. Framed - 26" H x 29 1/2" W. Biography (courtesy Askart: The Artists' Bluebook): Biography (courtesy Askart: The Artists' Bluebook): Paris-born Philippe Auge was inspired by Renaissance art during travels in Italy and Greece as a young man, and his first paintings were still lifes on panels. He worked as an assistant to noted scenic designer Guillo Coltellaci before returning to Paris to study at the Ecole Des Beaux Arts. There, he caugh the attention of George Braque, who encouraged and counseled him. Auge's first major exhibition took place in London in 1959. He went on to exhibit internationally, including at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris. He is known for works that combine a Renaissance aesthetic with a sense of 20th century surrealism.
