Item Details
Description
George Warren Rickey (American, 1907-2002) " Space Churn With Cams II " abstract kinetic steel sculpture, signed and dated "Rickey 1972" and numbered 15 on base. 11 3/4" H x 6 5/8" W. Provenance: private Nashville, Tennessee collection, purchased June 7, 1972 from Staempfli Gallery, New York. Insurance appraisal dated May 18, 1990 by Maxwell Davidson Gallery for $12,000. Biography (courtesy Askart: The Artists' Bluebook) - George Rickey is known for his precisely engineered kinetic sculptures. He was born in Indiana, and studied at the Ruskin School of Drawing, Oxford, England, and with Andre Lhote in Paris. From 1930 until the late 40s, he was a fresco and mural painter, and also a teacher, chairing the art department at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania, from 1941 to 1948. He completed his first mobile in 1945 while serving in the Air Force, and in 1949, he began glass kinetic works, after which he experimented with a variety of materials. Stainless steel became his preferred medium. His sculptures (many of which are very large scale) are included in collections at the Tate Gallery, London; the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.; Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art; Museum of Fine Arts Boston; J. Paul Getty Museum; MOCA, Los Angeles; and Kunsthalle der Stadt, Germany to name a few. (Additional high-resolution photos are available at www.caseantiques.com)
