Description
Exceptionally early Tennessee land grant, dated 1790 and signed by North Carolina governor Alexander Martin, partially printed document granting 640 acres in Davidson County North Carolina (later Tennessee) on the Harpeth River to Thomas McDaniel, a private in the Continental Line, in consideration of his "signal bravery and persevering zeal". Numbered 1204. It is accompanied by a map of the property surveyed in 1787 and signed by William Nash, witnessed by Frederick Davis (father of John Davis) and Davis Noland. Note: Tennessee became a state in 1796. This is the earliest Middle Tennessee land grant Case has ever offered, and a rare example of Martin's autograph. Provenance: the estate of Sarah Hunter Hicks Green, formerly of Historic Devon Farm, Nashville, Tennessee. (Additional high-resolution photos are available at www.caseantiques.com)
Condition
General toning, map is in good condition; land grant has some tears at fold lines, fading to printed text, and there is a crease across Martin's signature.
