Description
Pair of Japanese Kano School Scrolls depicting "Birds and Flowers of the Four Seasons". 1st item: Watercolor on silk painting depicting a Chinese Golden Pheasant in center of a landscape, surrounded by its mate and other smaller birds, including a black bird flying overhead and small white pollen or snowflakes in the air. Inscription and seal lower left. Image - 34 1/2" H x 12 3/8" W. Overall - 63" H x 16" W. 2nd item: Watercolor on silk scroll painting, depicting a Chinese golden pheasant peering over a branch at a female bird. They are flanked by white and pink peonies, while other birds fly near a prunus branch overhead. Signed lower right with seal and inscription. Image - 34" H x 12" W. Overall - 54" H x 16" W. Likely late 18th century or earlier. Provenance: The collection/estate of Mr. and Mrs. W. Jeter Eason, Memphis, Tennessee, by descent to present consignors. Condition
1st item: Brocade surrounding image is in faded, fragile condition with tears/separations and small holes at top; top bar nearly detached. Image retains bright colors with minimal ground discoloration but has 2 long narrow stains running the length of the image and some scattered creases. 2nd item: Main image is in very good condition with a few extraneous paint splatters (not tears) and light toning. However, the ends are in poor condition: bottom bar missing, upper brocade section and hanging bar are worn and fragile.
