Description
Old, original, and authentic. We know them today as the storied Chicago Bears. But in 1920, they were inaugurated as an independent eleven by the Staley Starch Co. in Decatur, Illinois. A year later, and on the heels of overwhelming on-field success, their captain, coach, scout and GM, George Halas, moved the team to Chicago with the stipulation he retain the company name for the 1921 season. The following season Halas christened them the "Bears." This vintage photograph depicts that group of professional pioneers titled "1920 STALEY TEAM". It depicts a roster of rugged college stars, ringers, local toughs and early glimpses of Hall of Famers Halas and center George Trafton, as well as QB and future Brooklyn Dodger skipper Chuck Dressen. (Later in the season, Halas added future Hall of Famers Guy Chamberlin, Paddy Driscoll, and Jimmy Conzelman). Each player is identified, including Halas wearing a striped captain's jersey. Signed in black marker by George Halas. 8 1/2" x 10 1/2"
