A pair of very nicely done ink on paper drawings by the noted American illustrator and courtroom artist, Leo Hershfield (1904-1979). According to Wikipedia: "NBC referred to him as the "Dean of Courtroom Artists" since he was the first modern artist to sketch for TV news in 1950's and covered 147 trials for NBC until when he died in the late 1970's.. . . . When the war ended he became a freelancer, illustrating for publications such as Reader's Digest, The Saturday Evening Post and Kiplinger's Changing Times. During the 1950s and early 1960s he also created vivid political cartoons as cover art for the Democratic Digest, the publication of the Democratic National Committee. Hershfield illustrated the covers and interiors of more than 55 books, including those by Richard Armour,Vincent Price, H. Allen Smith and Groucho Marx. Hershfield worked in many media including pencil, pen and ink, watercolor, block printing, wood carving, metal sculpture and photography." As you can see, one of these pieces depicts a gentlemen in a three piece suit and bow tie, smoking a cigar. This piece is signed and dated 1932 by the artist in the lower right hand corner. The size of the image within the matte cutout is approximately 8 1/2" by 12 1/2," while the outer dimensions of the frame are 18" by 22." The other piece also depicts a gentlemen in a dark suit with a pocket square. This piece is likewise signed by the artist in the lower left hand corner, but not dated. The size of the image within the matte cutout is approximately 12" by 17 3/8," while the outer dimensions of the frame are 21" by 26 1/2." As you can see, there are some small spots/soiling on the paper near the hand and forehead; however, they are not very noticeable.
