Description
Western Europe, probably a Dutch artist, signed "Kapool" (sp), ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A lively port scene painting created by a European (most likely Dutch) artist in a Post-Impressionist style whose signature is painted in red in the lower right corner (possibly "Kapool" though difficult to decipher). The scene features many busy workers engaged with the cargo of several docked boats at the port. Clearly, this artist subscribed to the Post-Impressionist response to the Impressionists' embrace of accurate depictions of light in order to take on a new direction in the 1880s and further explore their emotional responses rather then the literal optical impressions produced by nature, venturing further into explorations of line, color, form, and a deeper symbolism. The best known artists of this generation include Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890), Georges Seurat (1859-1891), Paul Gauguin (1848-1903), and of course Paul Cezanne (1839-1906). Each of these artists, like "Kapool", followed his own stylistic journey in a quest for his own artistic innovation. Even though they pursued different styles, their independent pursuits of unique expressions would share in a collaborative influence on the future course of the art world, inspiring the Nabis painters, the German Expressionists, the Fauvists, and the Cubists to explore expressionism and abstraction. Housed in an attractive painted white and copper wood frame, a wonderful work for anyone interested in early modern marine genre paintings! Size: painting measures 23" L x 15.5" W (58.4 cm x 39.4 cm); framed: 27.75" L x 19.75" W (70.5 cm x 50.2 cm)
