Description
Southeast Asia, Indonesian, Java or Bali, ca. early 20th century CE. South Asia, Sri Lanka, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand carved and painted wood mask depicting a character for the Topeng dance of Indonesia in which costumed dancers don expressive masks while they perform traditional stories about mythical kings and legendary heroes. The Topeng dance originated in the 17th century, and the word "topeng" literally means mask in Indonesian. This example has a bright red face, a sign that it represents a strong character. Beyond this, the visage is quite dramatic with its enormous eyes, upturned nose, thick mustache, mouth with pronounced teeth and fangs, and elegant crown of green and gold hues. Size: 6.5" W x 8" H (16.5 cm x 20.3 cm)
