Item Details
Description
2 piece Robert Compton Bristol Vermont Gas Fired Copper Red and Chun Pottery Pieces. A Tri Handled Vase 6x6x9" and a Pilgrim Pitcher 6x5x11. Gas reduction firing uses a fuel, such as natural gas or propane. The temperatures of a gas fired reduction kiln may exceed 2300F, when the glazes melt and mature. Because gas is a combustible fuel, the potter can control the ratio of oxygen to gas during the firing. A classic example of a reduction glaze is Chun Red also known as Copper Red.Copper produces a grey, white or green color when fired in an oxygen rich atmosphere. However when fired in a reduced oxygen environment a glaze containing copper can turn a variety of reds ranging in color from peachy pink to bright apple red. This glaze dates back to the Sung dynasty in China. Wt on both 5 pds 10 oz. PROVENANCE: A Historic Charlotte Street Home, Charleston, SC. Robert Compton is a versatile, internationally known and respected American Master Potter from Bristol, Vermont. He makes wheel-thrown, wood-fired and salt-glazed stoneware as well as raku and pit-fired work. Compton has also been involved in various architectural commissions. In recent times, he. has been making large vessels (up to 4 feet/1.3 meters) and other one-of-a-kind pieces. His most recent kiln is 250 cubic foot noborigama. In the early 1990s he built a variety of kilns at his studio. This provided him with the opportunity to offer summer workshops at the pottery. From 1993 until 2006, potters from around the world came to his studio workshops to share a common interest in clay. He is not currently giving workshops at his Vermont Studio, as he has many invitations to give international workshops and so travels and lectures extensively.
