Description
Exceptional Large late 19th, early 20th c. African Basket with Leather Rim & Bottom from the Dogon tribe in Mali, Africa. It has a leather hide rim and a leather hide bottom and the center has woven hide. There is a leather loop for hanging the basket up and away off the floor. This basket was hand made using reed pieces on the inside to form the structure. To the Dogon of Mali even simple objects, carry a sacred value and a symbolic meaning. As with this basket its square-shaped base refers to the cardinal points while the circular-shaped top symbolizes the celestial vault. Measures 18x18x10.
