Description
Mysterious charcoal drawing by artist Aubrey Penny featuring a wash of intense charcoal strokes that create a face in the negative space. Work is signed in the lower right corner, "Penny 56." Listed American artist Aubrey John Robert Penny was born in Texas in 1917 and eventually moved to Southern California, where he passed in 2000. He achieved both a BA and MA in Art from UCLA, where he served as a member of the art council from 1955 to the 1970s. His works have exhibited at LACMA (1954-7) and in Deauville, France. He is deemed the originator of the "No-osism" style, which focuses on the mind in the continuum and the delicate reactions that occur within the brain that lead to feeling and action.
